Azul Cargo presented today (9), the first Class F cargo aircraft in the world. The innovative initiative developed by Azul took place in partnership with LHColus Tecnologia in a project that went through stages of conceptual development, cabin preparation, proof of concept and development test flights. The final certification of the aircraft, received in a short space of time in the first week of February, was in partnership with Anac.
The addition of this aircraft to Azul Cargo's operating fleet will bring even more flexibility and cost-benefit to the company's logistics operations. Benefiting from the plane's low travel cost combined with 15 tonnes of payload capacity, the E195 F-Class will help Azul Cargo transform logistics in Brazil.
“Today, with the launch of the E195 F-Class freighter, we intend to transform the Brazilian market, this time in logistics”, says Abhi Shah, Vice President of Revenue at Azul. “With unparalleled operational flexibility, reliability, access to varied airport infrastructure, the E1 F Class is the perfect aircraft to offer a competitive advantage to our logistics customers. With this aircraft we can really transform and grow logistics in Brazil”, adds Shah.
“Over the next few weeks we will have 4 E195 aircraft with this new configuration, further transforming the logistics service in Brazil. These aircraft bring even more flexibility to strengthen our network and expand logistics business across the country”, celebrates Izabel Reis, director of Azul Cargo.
In addition to all the logistical gains, this innovation is aligned with Azul's ESG strategy and commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2045, as each E195 freighter reduces carbon emissions by 7,900 tons per year and has up to three times more capacity compared to previous versions of the aircraft.
Class F Cab
Categorization in Class F means that the aircraft is certified to transport cargo in the cabin, in heat- and fire-resistant containers, with an innovative fire detection system using thermal cameras.
The prototype aircraft, PR-AXW, performed 12 concept tests, 8 ground smoke barrier tests and a certification flight with ANAC inspectors.

First in the world: Azul's Embraer E195 Class F holds 15 tons of cargo (Blue)
Company's cargo divisionAzul Linhas Aéreas, Azul Cargo presented last week theworld's first F-Class aircraft, based on the passenger jetEmbraer E195. According to the company, the modified model can carry up to 15 tons of cargo.
The Class F designation indicates that the aircraft is certified to transport cargo in the cabin that was previously used to transport passengers. Not only that, the volumes must be stored in heat and fire resistant containers and the interior of the plane has thermal cameras.
The E195 Class F transformation project was developed by Azul engineering teams and the adaptation of the aircraft was carried out by LHColus Tecnologia. In total, the prototype performed 12 concept tests, eight ground fire barrier tests and a certification flight with ANAC technicians. The model was certified for commercial use at the beginning of February and can be returned to passengers in a short time.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Brazilian airlines were already authorized by ANAC, on an exceptional and temporary basis, to transport cargo in the cabin of passenger planes. The Class F configuration, on the other hand, generates a permanent Supplementary Type Certificate and the possibility of loading larger loads.
In response toAirway, Azul reported that the loading of cargo into the cabin is limited by the dimensions of the aircraft's doors, originally designed to receive passengers. According to the company, the plane can accommodate volumes measuring 1.10 meters high, 0.50 meters wide and 0.84 meters long.

“We kept the overhead bins installed to ensure versatility and greater speed in reversals and cargo-to-passenger and passenger-to-cargo configurations. These reversals can be carried out within a period of up to five days. Furthermore, bins are excellent compartment options for accommodating small volumes/unitized packages”, added Azul.
High capacity
The fast conversion developed by Azul and its partner impresses with its large paid load capacity. With 15 tonnes on board, the E195 has a maximum take-off weight of 50.8 tonnes, i.e. a payload ratio of 29.5%.
As a comparison, the A321P2F, a cargo aircraft converted from passenger models, can carry 27 tons for a maximum takeoff weight of 93.5 tons (28.9%). In other words, the Embraer jet carries proportionally more load than the Airbus and over a significant distance, 3,200 km versus 3,800 km for the much longer European model.
The project restrictions are inherent to the impossibility of transporting standard containers as the jet did not receive a cargo door or floor reinforcement, interventions that are much more costly and would prevent its conversion for passengers.
In this sense, theEmbraer is studying a more aggressive conversion program, along the lines of what Airbus and Boeing do and which should give rise to a freighter with a capacity for 14 tons of paid cargo and a range of 2,000 nautical miles (3,700 km).
